Ate pizza and caffeine before bed and couldn’t wake up, so it ended up giving me vivid dreams…
I remember Tim* being in a dream – first time in probably a year. He was really nervous to the point he had to sit and had me sit in specific places at a table. He didn’t want to look at and didn’t want me to look at the mirror in the room. I didn’t understand why. I remember the table was a white table and we were in chairs with wheels. I think there was a large picture window behind me – something that was in every scene, but surprisingly, I never cared enough to look through it to watch people or get a location.
I can’t remember what we discussed.
Later, at the same table, my friend was there testing a Muse “brain sensing” device to see what data showed up. I need to buy one in waking life whenever my school loan goes through.
In another scene, the GRID Lab leaders (my bosses) were preparing a place at another school for a Halloween/VR walkthrough museum sort of thing where there were rows of 10 ft. x 10 ft. (some that went farther back for equipment, etc.) spaces. There was a large fish tank and the fish swam up to me like they do in waking life. One fish looked like it was part dog and I was worried it was going to drown. There were people in there doing a scene, I think, when someone handed me the edge of a sign for the event to stick on the wall. It blocked my view of the scene.
They ended up draining the tank (they saved the fish) to have another space to work in. The room had old faux wood paneling.
Later, I was in a university large classroom with orange seats from the ’70s…or maybe it was a school color and the chairs were from the ’90s? One thing I liked was that the seating wasn’t in straight rows – they actually curved a little. It was still plastic and old soiled material you find in old higher ed schools. I remember another friend coming in and sitting down in a row off to my left – she commented about the color, too.
I was showing off the Kinect and projection in the room doing things like projecting the chairs onto another wall to make it look like there were more chairs and projecting door handles on the door panels so you couldn’t figure out which one was real. The feed glitched every once in a while showing our point clouds and infrared data. I saw people were gearing up to leave through the door I was in front of, so I haphazardly grabbed my stuff to get out of the way. I walked back to the table that was in front of the rows of seats and the first friend looked as if he were sleeping with his head down, using some soft, but thin, craft padding material. I can’t remember if I was wearing a coat or a blanket, but I took it off and handed it to him – it was a really soft and thick material with a funky, but fun design – saying, “This would make a better pillow, but it probably smells like me.” (meaning, I was just really active and I haven’t washed that thing in a while, so it’s probably really sweaty) He took it, bunched it up and used it as a pillow and went back to sleep. I thought it was funny, but still worried about the smell, but ignored my worries I put my tripod and Kinect away.
There were other, smaller dreams, too. But I’ll just add tags and categories.
* Name was changed
From a speech-to-text note recorded when half asleep:
A place like the Ridges at night. Driving around weird corners and up strange hills. People running in scrubs.
I went up to ask them why they were running and they said they had death threats and something to do with the machines they operate like a CAT scans or an X-ray machines. I asked them if they called the cops and they said no, so I went to go call the cops.
I pictured the bad guy having powers like being able to fire electricity from his hands and my character was a “spiegel” or “mirror,” so I was planning to fire back, but I thought I need to block first. So how do I block? I don’t know how to block, but I was willing to try.
In a classroom, the big TV playing some game. A young woman walked up to the TV, which was needed for the game. I high-fived her and the older guy that also went up to the screen. There was a dog – a big dog – maybe a Rottweiler. I slept on the floor below.
I remember being in a “dream game” environment and there were blue lockers everywhere, even on central pillars. I had a heavy black backpack somehow hung on my locker. A female character told me to run because something bad was coming. I wanted to see what this bad thing was and defeat it. I knew I didn’t have time to grab my stuff, so I just hid behind a pillar and watched a moving, changing space/object enter the room. It was crawling on the floor and I didn’t know how to defeat it or if it could hear my heartbeat or smell me. I tried to stealth it by staying on the opposite side of the pillar as it moved around. I don’t remember if I had a weapon, but the scary thing turned into a VERY large, but adorable bulldog. I thought it was clever because it’s cute AND can kill you and I’d feel bad about even attempting to hurt a dog. It was sniffing out my location, though.
This “game” ran a few times and I remember remaking it to have either a wooden or metal bat randomly appear in any of the lockers.
I was telling someone about my 3D interface idea for my final project and they said something similar had been done with a wall mounted shelf and the user would take objects and put them in the shelf to run a specific program. I was like, “I stealing this idea!”
Later, I woke up and realized that was from my own mind. I went back to sleep trying to think how I could use it in waking life. I thought of something in Dream 4.
I remember being in a mall similar to the one on E. State Street. The floor had square brown tiles and the storefronts were openings to “dream games” or environments. I would love to use this in waking life as ways people could go from a landing page to other programs. Second Life used signs and boxes as portals, this dream had a seamless entry into the environments.
I kinda wanted to go to the Cincinnati Zoo for some reason, but the opening went down a half-mile path under a highway just to get to the zoo. I was thirsty and needed water and thought it was a lot of needless walking, especially without water. I do remember a food truck that was selling flavored ice off to the left of the tunnel entrance that reminded me of the one that was outside the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum back in July.
I took the tunnel and ended up in what looked like a Goodwill store. I was confused because I was trying to get to the zoo. I looked around and there was a kiosk of small novelty pamphlets. One had an image of my dad. I laughed and picked it up and looked through it thinking my dad did some random side project. I looked back and the image changed to someone similar looking, but not my dad. That should have been a sign I was dreaming since I even had a conversation around 3 weeks ago in waking life where Owen told me to look at text or a clock or image, look away, then look back and if it changed, I was probably dreaming. But, of course, I just chalked it up to being wrong in the first place.
I somehow ended up in a “social room” where they are like group chats/rooms in that old Palace program from the late 1990s/early 2000s. The people there were hippies all gathering to write songs about the sun or something and their room reminded me of the 60s/70s – way too much corduroy and saffron-colored things. My Intro to VR teacher was part of the group and was the only one who recognized me.
I randomly yelled out, “BOOKSTORE!!!!!” at him and the others. I had just come up with the idea I’d use the wall-mounted shelving idea where people could place books in the shelf and use augmented reality to access the book trailer, more information, etc. and featured books could be in the shelves on a wall.
I remember having a new apartment, but in the dream, it fit in a plastic “box” the size of a mattress. Inside, it was an older room-sized apartment, but I found that imagining it to be a newer place, it turned into an awesome apartment.
I later showed it off to friends and coworkers in the dream. They thought it was interesting, but didn’t know how it worked. I even showed one of them how the steps going down to a basement were just an illusion to make the space seem bigger.
I remember there was a dog and it really liked the guy I liked in the dream.
There was also a scene where I told my coworker who had a clear box with colorful slugs about how I dreamed she had these slugs.
Later, I remember looking around the “box” to figure out how it worked. It was in a city I’ve dreamed about before and it was leaned up against an old warehouse that was partly under construction.
In another dream, I was with a class or team in a place with tall white walls. I remember taking a walk outside and it was near a tree-lined creek. I later went to a restroom hoping to hear the guy I like walk by so I could bump into him and we’d walk outside together.
I dreamed that I was living with a male friend (not someone I know in waking life) and our place was weird. To get to my end of the house, I had to go down a metal ladder.
I remember a scene where the guy was being nice and spraying to kill the bugs in my area and said he wanted the dryer in his area. I agreed because I never use a dryer anyway.
All of a sudden, biting flies and spiders attacked him and he started smacking them. The bugs then attacked me and I kept smacking them dead, thinking eventually, I’d get them all.
This merged into a scene where I was getting into my car to escape the swarm. The swarm, including the wolf-spider-sized spiders. I stepped on one of the spiders and ground it into the floor of the car, but it wouldn’t die. I was on the phone with the guy and I told him, “These spiders are indestructible! They’re like monkey spiders!” I think I was thinking gorilla or King Kong when I said that.
I remember being at a nerdy friend’s house semi-helping him unpack after moving. He was talking about being in debt and in trouble with the police because they found out about some fraud he did with horse racing.
He had these flat sculptures of animals that were painted green with white squiggly lines. I thought they were neat and asked them if he still wanted them. He was very adamant about wanting to keep them.
I remember being part of some TV show/reality show and I was able to get a puppy to behave for this middle-aged obese woman. The dog was this neat copper color.
She looked dumbfounded when she was able to sit in the back seat of a van holding the dog. She said that has never happened before.
I folded a piece of cotton bedding and put it in a clear plastic case. I put it under her chair. I found a strip of fabric that was white on one side and red bandanna pattern on the other. I let the dog sniff it and explained to the woman the smell helps reinforce the training.
She said something like, “The universe is made of wires?”
I said, “Possibly.”
